Marilyn Tuley

Marilyn was raised in Marietta in the 1950’s and she shares about her childhood  adventures like riding her pony to school.  She also tells about her first date, which is fiction. but it catches your attention.  Her stories include the history of Marietta which few know about.  She also tells the true story behind the first Thanksgiving,  Angels,  the Big Secret,  the day her Daddy almost died, and behind the scenes of Hollywood.  AND …do not miss her dramatic presentation of Scarlett from Gone with the Wind!

She also shares the stories of Virginia “Jennie” Tate Anderson and Jane Bolan Glover, whose names may sound familiar to those who have visited Marietta landmarks.

Anderson’s name graces the Cobb Civic Center’s theater, while the Glover family name is attached to the park at the center of Marietta Square.

But Tuley highlighted other aspects of the Glover family who started the Glover Machine Works on Atlanta Rd. which built locomotives. Would you believe the business lasted 100 years!

Women have been behind important men forever, but we do have important women just in themselves here in Marietta. We have Glover Park, but who is Glover?

John Heyward Glover Jr. was the first Mayor of Marietta in 1852. He was so grateful for being elected Mayor of Marietta that he donated the park in the center of Marietta to the city. And that it would always be for the public. However in 1950, the city of Marietta decided to make the park a parking lot. This incensed the Glover family so they hired Margaret Mitchell’s brother, an attorney, to fight for the cause of the people. And we won! So the Glover Park will forever serve the people of Marietta.

“That’s what we do (with the program) — move back into history with the family moving here in 1847. That’s a long time ago, but they had very important parts here, and it even continues to this day because they still live here.”

Marilyn Tuley has been doing storytelling for about 12 years plus teaching children for 10 years in a program called Divorce Care 4 Kids.

In recent years our presentations have been in Senior Living homes in the area plus at local libraries. She also has researched the history of Marietta which few know about.

She has also written stories just for children with a message that encourages and inspires them.
